For proper operation of a DE filter should be turned off for about 4 hours a day. Like sand filters, they require backwashing when the pressure rises to about 6 pounds above the normal operating pressure. After rewinding, you recoat the filter grids with new DE. This is done by feeding through the skimmer so DE is pumped to the filter vat.
